Creation Of An Open-Air Museum And Area For Cultural Activities In Ag. Paraskevi, Municipality Of Thermi
On a plot of land, in the area of Ag. Paraskevi, Municipality of Thermi, an open-air museum space is being created to highlight cultural heritage and a space for cultural activities. Pedestrian routes and mainly lightweight structures are being organized in dialogue with the landscape.
Approach
The study envisages lightweight semi-outdoor structures, mainly integrating natural materials, which will be in harmony with the landscape and the forest character of the area. In parallel with the regeneration interventions, the protection and promotion of the natural environment of the area in question will be achieved.
The design proposal is analyzed in three spatial systems that interact and coexist: the natural landscape, the wandering route and the grid of constructions. The basic intention is to create spaces that are not rigid and static but can be transformed and receive different programs or serve different functions at the same time, offering fields open for different spatial experiences. The exhibition spaces are part of the route, integrated into it and themselves become a route - movement in space and time. This interpenetration and coexistence of functions and actions is associated with the game of open - closed (mainly open), while nature is always present in the visitor's experience.
Along the plot of land, a basic route will be created that will branch out, a tour path, which will be a reference to movement, as a basic element of traditional way of life of nomadic people. On this route, individual units are organized, stopping points, resting points, material exhibition points and other activities. One of the main spatial units is the outdoor events area - an amphitheater. The amphitheater will be created by utilizing the slope of the ground, to produce a natural amphitheatrical space on the slope. The structures are organized into three basic units: In the entrance area and along the route, three visitor information areas will be created. The material to be exhibited will be organized and presented in meaningful units, which will correspond to the units of the structures. Through this material, the "narration" of the story or many stories will be carried out. In the area as a whole, the existing plant material will be protected, while additional trees will be planted in suitable places for shading in relation to seating areas or to define routes. The type of plantings is associated with the proximity to the adjacent stream and with the storytelling.
Benefits
A space is created to highlight cultural heritage with the aim of activating collective memory. The space integrates the function of the open-air museum and cultural activities with forest recreation. The relationship of interventions and storytelling with the landscape and natural elements emerges as dominant and decisive.
